Background and History

Young people  (age 15-35) make up about 68% of Tanzania's population. Young people have the highest unemployment rate in Tanzania, especially in urban ares like Dar es Salaam where BYC is located.

There are about 160,000 children living with HIV/AIDs in Tanzania and over 1 million children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDs. Less than 1 in 10 children receive some kind of HIV/AIDs support and less than 5% recieve some kind of medical or social support.

Buguruni Youth Center (BYC)

BYC a non governmental sports organisation is situated in Buguruni Ward, Ilala District,  Dar es Salaam, started running its activities in 2007, then as part of EMIMA Center. In 2011 Buguruni Youth Center was registered as an independent youth organisation  under the Societies Act [CAP. 337 R.E. 2002], with a mission to promote sports participation amongst children and young people in low income/disadvantaged communities, and to use sports as means of promoting youth development, build community capacity and create awareness about HIV and AIDS, Environmental Health, Gender Equality and Drug Abuse.

Buguruni Youth Center was founded by youth and community members from Buguruni. These founders now continue to run the youth center. BYC is therefore run by the  community for the community.
The organisation runs after school sports activities at Buguruni Primary School, and currently has more than 100 children and young people participating in sports at the center.
